Wind, farm dust and the edge of town
A solid privacy fence on an open edge of town takes the full push of a storm front. Taller panels catch more wind, so posts need to be larger, set deeper and spaced carefully. Gaps between boards, or a shadowbox style, can lower the pressure while still giving a good measure of privacy.
Farm activity nearby also leaves a mark. Dust from tilled fields settles on panels, and equipment or spray drift is part of life at the field edge. Fabric fences and open pickets shed dust easily. The clay soil that is common across this part of North Alabama softens after rain, so the first storms after installation are a good time to check that the posts have not shifted.
